Engaging in participatory action research to be actors of real change alongside the target audience

As part of the European action research project NewABC – Networking the educational world. Against Boundaries for Community-Building, funded by Horizon 2020, COMBO has set up a pilot action aimed at developing good practices in the non-formal education sector with and for unaccompanied minors in situations of wandering mobility. Multi-modal workshops were co-created by the team in Melilla, Marseille, and Barcelona with the target audience. The pilot was replicated by the Union of Refugees in Portugal (UREP) in collaboration with the University of Porto to test its adaptability to different contexts.

Other projects have been launched in Marseille. As part of the Marseille Summer program, micro-street workshops were held in 2022 in the Gare Saint-Charles/Porte d’Aix area with unaccompanied minors and young adults without protection who use psychotropic substances, with a focus on risk reduction. A video and screen printing workshop was launched with the participation of young girls without protection (2023-2024).

In January 2026, the European project NewABC was highlighted as a “Success Story” by the European Commission.

This recognition distinguishes European projects that have demonstrated a concrete impact and particularly significant results.

The overall aim of the project was to promote the inclusion of children and adolescents from migrant backgrounds in European education systems by developing innovative educational tools and actions co-constructed with schools, families, and local communities.

The solutions developed were tested in several European countries and made available to educational stakeholders to support school inclusion, student well-being, and social cohesion.

Establishing new international partnerships

Since 2025, COMBO has been developing new European and Euro-Mediterranean partnerships focused on education, inclusion, and cultural cooperation.

With this in mind, an exploratory mission is being carried out in Morocco in early 2026 to identify local partners and support organizations in developing their strategies for accessing international funding.

This work builds on the association’s experience in European projects, particularly in the context of the Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, and Erasmus+ programs.

The aim is to strengthen exchanges between actors in the field, researchers, educational structures, and civil society organizations in order to develop future collaborative projects.

Preparation of new European projects

In line with the projects carried out in recent years, the association is currently working to identify new European and international calls for projects.

These initiatives mainly concern the Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ programs, focusing on themes related to education, international cooperation, culture, and social innovation.

The association is in contact with various academic, associative, and institutional partners in order to build future consortia and develop new initiatives.

Consolidation and development of activities

Since 2024, the association has been working on internal structuring, archiving, and promoting completed projects.

This phase allows the association to capitalize on the experience gained in European projects and artistic and socio-educational initiatives.

At the same time, new partnerships are being developed in France and internationally with the aim of launching future collaborative projects in the fields of education, culture, and cooperation.
